THIRST

"THIRST is a short film that is moralized around the topic of giving to the homeless, and being charitable. The film begins with a man who finds himself in the core of the desert. The audience then views the man struggle to drink water, as any water his lips make contact with instantly turn to sand, almost in an act of decantation. The story rises to the man gaining awareness about the series of events that led to him being cursed with this horrific fate. Later, the man sits on the side of a road posing as a homeless person, asking people for water. This man is not homeless. In the past, he had rudely rejected a homeless person who was requesting water. The man is now trying to transfer the curse to another individual, to which he was successful, passing it on to a lady who would rather give the water to her dog than the protagonist.

Subjective Interpretation

Active Engagement

This short film, although lacking verbal cues, is very descriptive through non-verbal cues. Nearing the end of the film, the audience is shown that there is a voice inside of the person's mind, this reveals the details of how the curse was placed onto him and what action he took to face the consequence. This individual is constantly met with an emotion of anger and frustration in the situation he is provided. He later becomes happy as he is finally able to drink water once the lady refuses to give him water, which the curse is then placed on her. I felt that this film really connects with the viewer, keeping the audience invested in the outcome of the film. Finally, at the end of the film, I found myself cheering for the man who had faced such hardship and escaped his fate.

Active engagement and audience retention are important aspects when the topic regards any form of entertainment. Having engaging scenes is the cornerstone of any film, this story went above and beyond with quick changes in tone with the background music building up to certain events. While possessing engaging scenes in a film is important, it is important to convey these details to the viewer clearly, placing the emphasis on the quality of the filmography. In my opinion, THIRST is a high quality movie that easily keeps me engaged and involved in the film.

Contextual influences

Multiplicity of Meanings

Contextual influences evident at certain times in this film, tying together different events. This is shown with reference to buildup of the background music to emphasize a development in the storyline or a unexpected plot twist. The hierarchal situation is also assumed in the film while being provided context clues, these assumptions include the fact that the individual with the curse placed on him is in the higher bracket of society. The audience presumes that this is a fact due to clues such as the person's house having a pool, it seems to be in a tropical setting in the US such as Miami or Los Angeles, where housing rates are very high. Overall, contextual influences are clear-cut in this film, without any falter in the viewer's perspective.

Multiplicity of meanings are openly present in the interpretation of the film, it can be seen as a parable. The story undoubtedly has a moral, highlighting the act of giving back to the community. This film can also be seen as an expression of how water is a privilege to many, and should not go unappreciated. The main character in this film struggles to get water, becoming more frustrated at each turn of the story, having his water immediately turn to sand. This struggle for a basic need is still present in many countries. This film makes the viewer appreciate their life, being able to treat having clean water as a right. Overall, there is plenty of meanings in the film, adaptable to the audience.

Emotional Response

THIRST is a film that shows how each event is a result of the person's own emotional response. The man comes to realization that the series of occurences where he cannot drink water anymore, and gets transported to the desert, is a upshot of how he treated a homeless person previously. Although we don't agree with his actions beforehand, we as a audience perceive his struggle and root for the man. This could be a example of how in real life, imprisonment should be considered very carefully, and the true effect that it has on the mental and physical state of an individual. We should be thankful that we live in a world where laws and regulations around incarceration is not taken lightly, regardless of the person's actions. Finally, the film concludes with a feel-good ending where the man is released of his curse by passing it on to another deserving individual. Overall, the man went through tremendous growth and the curse proved to be quite useful in rehabilitating his mindset.
